With numerous concerts, masterclasses, lectures, presentations on career development and evening jam sessions throughout the city, the festival also boasts a guitar competition with NO age limit, NO required pieces and over $5000.oo in prizes/gifts (the final round partially judged by the audience), a paid concert in the next festival and 6 hours of studio time to record/master a CD.

Past competitors include guitarists from Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Costa Rica, Cyprus, France, Germany, Holland, Italy Japan, Korea, Mexico, Malaysia, Mongolia, Nicaragua, Serbia, Uruguay and throughout the United States.

One of the most inexpensive festivals in the US, participants also receive free home hosting (room and board) and airport pickup from Kansas City International Airport (MCI).

In its 4th season, the St. Joseph International Guitar Festival & Competition, sponsored by Missouri Western State University, is one of the most progressive and original festivals in the US.
