Students in the Illustration Course at Missouri Western State University recently competed to create a publicity flyer for the 2006 St. Joseph International Guitar Festival & Competition.

With over a dozen entries, the winning flyer was designed by Missouri Western senior Graphic Design Major, Shannon Swanson. Ms. Swanson’s prize includes printing and distribution of the flyer and a $100 prize. Following graduation, Ms. Swanson plans to continue working in design in the region while building her portfolio for graduate school.

Geo Sipp, Assistant Professor in Art at Missouri Western said, “This was a marvelous opportunity for the Missouri Western art students to work in a friendly but competitive situation. It not only gave them a chance to apply the skills they’re learning at Missouri Western but the guitar festival design competition is a great way to help our art students become more aware of the professional aspects of applying their skills.”

Anthony Glise, Director of the guitar festival, echoed Professor Sipps’ sentiments. “Our festival is naturally focused on guitar but thanks to the support of Missouri Western faculty such as Professor Sipp, we’ve been able to create a situation where many other departments at Missouri Western are directly involved in the guitar festival. This is just another example of the commitment that Missouri Western has to cultivating the professional success of our students. I’m thrilled that Professor Sipp and the Missouri Western art students have contributed so much to this year’s festival and we’re all extremely excited with Ms. Swanson’s brilliant flyer.”
