Guitar Activities

Dear Guitar Friends,

Just a fast reminder that one of our top Missouri Western guitar majors, Josh Huffman, will be giving his Senior Recital on Wednesday, November 15 at 6:00 PM at Missouri Western, in the Leah Spratt Building, MC 101. The program offers an exceptional selection of classical guitar works and jazz solos. This is free and open to the public.

ALSO…
Immediately following Huffman’s recital, we will all be meeting at Café Acoustic for the monthly (also free and open to the public) St. Joseph Guitar Festival Outreach Masterclass directed by Jason Riley and Anthony Glise. All guitarists, styles and levels are welcome to come for a free lesson and coaching session.

ALSO…
The following night (Thursday, November 16 at 9:00PM)
The Missouri Western State University Rock Guitar Ensemble will perform at Café Acoustic. This electric guitar driven performance ensemble was developed for upper-level commercial music students to perform a variety of classic and contemporary styles with a rock aesthetic. A rock quintet, the group features the double electric guitar work of Josh Huffman and Brett Blakemore supported by Jesse Boley (drum set), Stacie Saythany, (electric bass) and Marshall Carter (guitar). The group uses a contemporary approach and sound concept to present their progressive instrumental arrangements with improvised solos. Besides performing the students also compose and arrange for the ensemble, cover promotional responsibilities, make audio and video recordings and study technical and historical topics.

The upcoming set for Café Acoustic will showcase a diverse repertoire including selections from The Allman Brothers, Frank Zappa, Jeff Beck and J.S. Bach while genre-jumping from jazz, bluegrass and surf. The MWSU Rock Guitar Ensemble is directed by adjunct professor of guitar, Jason Riley.

For more information on this unique ensemble, MWSU Guitar Program and Commercial Music Program, call Missouri Western State University, Department of Music (816) 271 4420 or visit http://www.missouriwestern.edu/music

HOPE TO SEE YOU ALL THERE !

BIOGRAPHY
The Ukrainian born guitarist Aleksandr Tsiboulski had his first guitar lessons at the age of twelve, shortly after moving to Adelaide. Initially inspired by rock and folk music, he very quickly found himself immersed in the world of the classical guitar after attending, aged 15, masterclasses of the Cuban composer and guitarist Leo Brouwer at the 1995 Darwin International Guitar Festival.

After studying with AndrasTuske in Adelaide, he went on to complete his undergraduate studies with the renowned Australian player and pedagogue, Timothy Kain (Australian National University) and the Argentinean Ernesto Bitetti (Indiana University). He graduated in 2001 from ANU with first class honours, receiving the highest mark awarded for a graduation recital at that school and a prestigious university award. Prior to this, he had already won all the major guitar competitons in Australia: the 1998 Adelaide Guitar Competition, 2000 Australian Guitar Competition and the 2001 City of Sydney Performing Arts Challenge (guitar section).

With assistance from such bodies as the Australia Council for the Arts, ArtSA, South Australian Youth Arts Board and the Ian Potter Foundation, he has benefited from continued private study with Carlos Bonnell (UK), David Leisner (USA) and Angelo Gilardino (Italy).

He has been three-time recipient of the Andres Segovia Memorial Scholarship to undertake residencies at the Banff Centre for the Arts in Canada, where he has worked and performed with such artists as Edgar Meyer (bass) and Patrick Gallois (flute), as well as a number of leading instrumentalists and composers of his generation.

Performances have taken him all around Australia, as well as to Great Britain, United States, the former Soviet Union, Mexico, Ireland and Canada.

He was winner of the 2003 Gisborne International Instrumental Competition in New Zealand, one of the high profile competitions for young instrumentalists in Australasia. Most recently, he was winner of three special prizes at the 2004 Havana International Guitar Competition (Cuba), and was awarded the prize of 2004 South Australian Young Achiever of the Year in the Arts.

Most recently, in 2005 Alexandr won First Prize at the prestegious St. Joseph International Guitar Festival Competition in St. Joseph, US sponsored by the Missouri Western State University Department of Music.
